Welcome back to the Proje’ blog! If you’re a first-time visitor, we post regular tips and articles about how to get the best results when you’re cleaning your car – whether it be exterior, interior, waxing, tyre dressing – whatever, we’re the experts! If you’re a return visitor, you’ll have seen that we have focused on the exterior of your car in the last few posts. So, today, it’s time to take a look inside!

We’ve all been guilty of neglecting the interiors of our cars before. It might be that you’re super-busy, so you’ve had a bite to eat, or a coffee, in the front seat while you’ve driven to your next destination. Maybe you spilt a bit of coffee, let some crumbs drop here and there, or perhaps you use the footwell of your passenger seat as a bin. We’ve seen it before!

Over time, this stuff all builds up. Stains, crumbs – and later mold, dirt and mud from your feet on your pedals and around your footwell, and all manner of things you can’t see going on in the back. If you have kids, they spit up or smear their food in hard-to-reach places, or maybe the last rear passenger had something to eat too, and didn’t think about cleaning up, because for some reason the mentality is a bit different when we’re in a car to when we’re in someone’s house.

Before you know it, your car interior is filthy. And it smells really bad! And now a standard vacuum, or spray, or air freshener just isn’t going to cut it. We need to go to drastic measures to get it looking, smelling and feeling great again. Nobody likes having to apologise to people when they get in your car, after all! So, here we are: our top tips for getting the interior of your car really clean. You might find that some of the steps don’t apply to you – perhaps you don’t have any leather, for example. You can miss out steps, but still follow the list in order to get a great-looking interior without spending days and days cleaning your car.

Step 1 – Give it the once over!

A great way to really isolate the main areas of serious dirt in a dirty car is to give it a once over. Some parts will clean really easily and you won’t need to come back to them. For this, you need a good, all-purpose interior cleaner. Our Alpha Interior Cleaner and Leather Cleaner is pH neutral, meaning it’s good on all surfaces, and is a really effective cleanser. So, you can remove oil, dirt, grime and stains from plastics and upholstery. Our specially-designed formula is not only pH neutral, it’s colorless, leaves no residue on your leather and smells of febreze. Alpha Interior Cleaner & Leather Cleaner will penetrate your leather and work from the inside to lift out dirt, oil and grease and preserve the quality with no residue or deterioration. Better still, it’ll take dirt straight off your other surfaces too, so you can just keep using it until your whole interior is done!

If you keep your interior relatively clean, you might even find that you don’t need to go beyond step 1. But at the beginning of this post, we said we were going to deal with a really dirty car. So, on to step 2…

Step 2 – Sort out the fabrics and upholstery

Now we’ve sorted out the less dirty parts of your car, it’s time to focus on the worst bits one by one. By fabrics and upholstery, we mean anything that isn’t plastic or leather. So we’re talking mats and other materials. Car mats are where the worst of the dirt sits. This is to be expected; it’s where your feet go. You’re looking for a few things in an ideal product here. Firstly, you want something that doesn’t mean you need to hose and clean your carpet first. Ideally, this means a product that will generate a great lather and lift dirt out from deep within your carpet fabric. Then, because it’s such a deep clean, you want to make sure it doesn’t smell too much like chemicals. If it does, that smell will hang around deep in your carpets and be really hard to get rid of. Our Benchmark Fabric and Upholstery Cleaner is worth a look. Its unique formula makes it easy to achieve perfect results with minimal effort. All you need to do is spray, scrub and wipe away the dirt. You can achieve perfect results with minimal effort, which makes Benchmark Fabric Cleaner the best car interior cleaner for those who want to achieve fantastic results in a short space of time. Benchmark Fabric and Upholstery Cleaner is a lather cleaner designed to lift and remove stains, set debris and nasty odors from your carpets, fabrics and upholstery without leaving a chemical smell or risking the more sensitive fabrics in your vehicle. It is ammonia-free, bleach-free and solvent-free, so you clean and protect the interior of your vehicle at the same time, restoring the quality of your fabric and leaving you with a good-as-new look to your interior. It is specially designed to be applied directly to dirty surfaces, meaning that you don’t’ need to initially clean and hose your carpets before use. This will not only save you preparation time, but you won’t be waiting around for your mats to dry before you can put them back in your vehicle.

Now, you’ve got really clean carpets and upholstery. The next step is to deal with your leather, but if you don’t have any leather in your car’s interior, you can just move on to step 4 now.

Step 3 – Leather

Leather doesn’t just absorb dirt, it absorbs odors, it cracks, fades and wears. It’s designed to not need replacing even in that kind of state, but you still want it to look its best so your car doesn’t look tired. Our very own Plush Leather Conditioner binds with leather fibers, reducing the ability of oils and grease to attach on to the leather surfaces. It has been formulated with the sole purpose of protecting and preserving your vehicle’s leather seats without adding a greasy film to them. The Plush Leather Conditioner is a high-quality leather conditioner lotion that is formulated to not only condition the leather but also bind to the leather to reduce future staining.

You’ll want to use a good applicator pad to really work the conditioner in, then you’ll find your leather restored to its former glory in no time!

Step 4 – Plastics

We’re on the home straight now. Time to get your plastics looking shiny and new. With a plastic cleaner, it isn’t just about wiping and getting it glistening. To save yourself work and costly repairs on damaged plastics, you should use a cleaner that protects plastics from UV damage and warping. Interior Satin Finish Protectant is the perfect product for this. It  is designed for dashboards, vinyl, door panels, consoles, and door moldings. One application is usually all you will need to leave your surfaces supple and protected against damaging UV rays. This interior protectant is dry to the touch, never greasy and leaves surfaces with a beautiful matte or satin finish in a matter of seconds. And it preserves the natural shine of matte and satin surfaces without any artificial films.

So, we’re done with our cleaning now! It’s time to give everything a really good spray, to get a lovely-smelling interior, just like a new car.

Step 5 – Scent

You might find that the best results come with using two scents – one for the overall interior and one for the leather. For this, you’ll need scents that aren’t overpowering and don’t smell like chemicals. At Proje’, we have two scents we can offer. New Car Smell is a light mist spray that doesn’t overpower; it leaves a freshness in your vehicle that reminds you of the time when your car was brand new. Combine this with our leather scent, sprayed directly on to your newly clean and restored leather. Our leather scent comes in the form of a non-toxic mist that you can spray around the whole car without worrying about damaging or staining any surfaces. Spray in to the air, around your dashboard or directly on to your leather seats to eliminate unwanted odors, replacing them with the wonderful smell of fresh leather.

If you’ve followed these steps, you should be done now, and have a really wonderful-looking car interior.
