Welcome back to the Proje’ blog! We give you the best tips, techniques and tricks to getting your car super-clean, both inside and out. This week, we’re moving inside your car and looking at a couple of things that get really dirty, really quickly: your carpets and upholstery.
Now, obviously, your carpets take a lot of punishment. It’s where you put your feet after all! So you get mud, hair, dust, stains from spillages and a whole load more sticking to the fibers. And what’s worse is that the weight of your feet tramples all that dirt down deep into your carpet, making it really hard to clean. As for your upholstery, it’s much the same. The backs of your passengers compress all the dirt and dust right into the fabric. But it doesn’t stop there! The natural oils from human hair and skin, including sweat and dead skin, all come into contact with your upholstery whenever you have a passenger, and your own skin even gets on the rear seats if you switch on your air conditioning, through the movement of the air. It’s a dirt factory inside your car!
Fortunately, we have a few great tips for cleaning the inside of your vehicle really thoroughly – not just so it looks clean. And we’ve developed some awesome products right here at Proje’ that will make the process much easier and, as always, enjoyable.
Cleaning Your Carpet
Now, with carpets the product really is key. An inferior product isn’t going to cut it when you try and get to the really deep-set, tough stains. All you need to do is spray, scrub and wipe away the dirt. The lather is key to the process, so we’re going to make sure it gets super agitated when we use it. To do this, spray the Fabric and Upholstery Cleaner solution directly onto your carpet or upholstery. Then take one of our carpet and upholstery brushes and agitate the spray. You can really go for it on your carpets; remember that agitation gets the active ingredients working, and there’s no bleach or ammonia in our products, so you don’t need to worry about going mad.
Once you’ve given it a really good scrub, wipe it clean with one of our microfiber towels before the lather dries, and you’ll have gotten one step closer to perfect carpets.
However, it may be necessary to repeat this process a few times. That’s fine – really deep stains can take a while to remove, and a good old-fashioned bit of elbow grease! Give it two or three goes if you need to.
But What If the Stains Are REALLY Bad?
Sometimes, stains have completely been absorbed by fabrics, and it can feel like no amount of scrubbing is going to make the difference. It’s time for the secret weapon – our top tip. This time, use the spray and give the carpet a scrub. Next though, lay your microfiber towel over the top of the carpet. Now, get an iron and set it to steam. Wet the towel and lay the iron across the top of the carpet for half a minute. Now, apply pressure and rub the towel with the iron. You should see the stain transferring from the carpet to the towel like magic! Remove the iron, give the carpet a good wipe with another microfiber towel and check how the stain is progressing. Again, you might need to repeat this stage a couple of times, but it’s really gratifying as you can actually see the stain transferring over to the towel!
A Word on Your Upholstery
As both our Benchmark Fabric Cleaner and Upholstery Brush are designed for use on carpets and upholstery, including leather, you’re going to get value for money and use one process to cover multiple areas of your car. And don’t worry about giving everything a really good scrub – the brush will make light work of any interior, but the brush strands are soft enough to make it perfectly safe for use on all cloth and carpeting material. This is great! However, due to the nature of upholstery and leather, don’t use the iron tip on these parts of the car! You shouldn’t need to anyway – the nature of leather, alcantara and other types of upholstery means that they are far less absorbent than carpets, as there are no strand fibers on display to suck up all the dirt.
You will now have a super-clean interior! Why not give it a finishing touch by having a spray of our new car scent? Lightly mist it around carpeting and underneath seats until you achieve the desired smell. We’ve aimed for subtle here – nothing overwhelming or chemically. You will find that this scent really brings back memories of what it’s like to sit in a brand-new car for the first time!
