Welcome back to the Proje’ blog. We like detailing to be fun, so you can keep it light and get great results, without having to expend too much energy. But sometimes, unfortunately, we need to get serious and talk about things that can’t be avoided. That’s right, it’s rust.

Now, rust is inevitable in certain situations, but it doesn’t have to be terminal. But there are some situations in which it’s completely avoidable – so this week, we’re going to look at how to minimize the risks and keep the dreaded rust at bay.

On the brakes

Each time you brake, the friction and subsequent heat that is generated causes a number of elements to be released from the braking area. You’ve got brake dust, iron, carbon, bits of brake pad… all this stuff gets kicked out during braking and then flies around inside your wheels and under your vehicle, getting lodged against your wheels, tires, arches and even chipping away at your paintwork. As everything is embedded, new debris then layers over the top of the old, making the problem much worse. You’re looking at permanent scarring to your wheels, or the creation of cracks in your paintwork that can grow or lead to oxidisation and the dreaded rust. When this problem goes untreated, it can get to the point where it is costly and risks permanent damage to your vehicle.

Iron Decon is a specially targeted, pH-neutral solution that gets rid of embedded and bonded iron build-ups from brake dust. It works on both visible and invisible deposit build-ups, letting you know when it’s finished working by changing color. This allows for more effective decontamination, ensuring that painted and metallic surfaces aren’t left to progressively corrode even after regular detailing services.

The pH neutral make-up of Proje’s Iron Decon ensures that any ongoing chemical reactions that might occur are completely neutralized. Ongoing corrosion simply isn’t an option! And the chemical formula is well-balanced, meaning that its uses don’t stop at wheels and iron build-ups. You can use Iron Decon on all painted surfaces to neutralize potential reactions with paintwork from a range of metallic elements. Iron Decon won’t strip paint, and is safe in contact with glass, meaning that it can be used liberally and comfortably.

It’s easy to wash away what you can see, but it’s often what you can’t see that causes the real damage. Decon works through chemical reactions, meaning that any minute corrosion that is happening but isn’t visible to the human eye, is stopped and neutralized at source.

Now, you’ll want to prepare the area by giving everything a clean and thorough rinse with our Vital Car Wash Soap. Then, all you need to do is mist the Decon all over the wheels and wait for the all-important color change. Then, rinse everything off thoroughly straight away – don’t allow the solution to dry.

On your bodywork

Is there a bit of rust on your paintwork? Get it sorted straight away, before it becomes a dangerous leak, a problem with your brakes or a massive bit of rust that means you need a respray or a new bit of panelling on your bodywork. Keep your car clean with a high-quality detailing product like our Vital Car Wash Soap, and then get it protected using a sealant. For a really great product that waxes and seals at the same time, take a look at our Hybrid Wax Sealant. Our Hybrid Wax Sealant doesn’t just deliver a beautiful shine; it seals your newly shiny exterior from all kinds of contamination – brake dust, excrement, water, UV rays and pollution – all for up to a year. It’s durable, resistant to extreme temperatures, hot or cold, and will have your car turning heads everywhere you go with that smooth, radiant shine. The secret is in the ingredients; the synthetic formula provides the best results for the overall finish, but also creates a direct bond with the surface of your vehicle, meaning that a really strong seal is created, so nothing can get in.

To use the sealant, apply 4 dime-sized dots of Hybrid Wax Sealant directly onto a blue applicator pad. Remember to work out of direct sunlight, then place the face of the applicator flat on the surface of the car – it is important to be as level as possible so that you transfer the Hybrid Wax Sealant in an even level fashion. Use light pressure to spread the sealant onto the surface in slow, circular patterns.Let the sealant cure for 5-10 minutes before wiping off with our White Intensive 2-Sided Interior Towel. Then, repeat steps 1-3 as needed to complete the entire vehicle, and apply touch-ups where necessary.

A final thought

Of course, when it comes to your wheels, underuse causes issues with rust too. So, the good news is that driving is a great method of protection. Now, get yourself out on the open road!
