Welcome back to the Proje’ blog! This week, we’re going to give you some of the insider pro tips on the most common bit of car detailing – washing your vehicle.

Now, you might think, “How is washing my car detailing?” But believe us when we say that it’s the most important, nuts-and-bolts activity you can do. All the high-end sprays and sealants you see getting put on top-end vehicles can only be as effective as they are on a clean, dry surface. The fact is that top detailers are top car washers – the two go hand in hand.

By following these simple tips on how to wash your car like a pro, you too can get your detailing journey off to the best possible start.

1. Find a top product

Want a soap that’s been specially developed to target the dirt that gets on paintwork? Look no further than our best-selling Vital Car Wash Soap. Vital Car Wash Soap separates dirt from paintwork so that you can wash it away easily, without any risk of scratching. The suds and bubbles are formed as a result of a special pH neutral chemical reaction with water, which is tough on dirt and grease but will not damage any wax or sealant. Vital Car Wash Soap is a professional product designed not to leave any spots, swirls or streaks that a basic water solution can easily do. Its multi-purpose formula means that you can use it on all parts of your vehicle – not just the paintwork. Use on glass, plastic, and other surfaces for the same, super-clean effect. You only need 2oz. of soap to wash an entire vehicle, meaning that our 16oz. bottle will last for eight thorough, professional washes.

2. Use a great wash mitt

Picking up a random dishcloth for your car can be a bad technique. If you don’t pick a soft cloth, then you could cause micro-abrasions on your paintwork, which will turn into bigger scratches over time. Remember, if you leave a scratch untreated on your bodywork, eventually oxidization will build up, leading to widespread rust, and more tricky problems to fix. Let’s avoid that by making sure you use a microfiber wash pad. Ours is a mitt – so you put it over your hand, which means you can cover all the contours of your vehicle more easily through the flexibility of your own hand, and it’s easier to control pressure. The soft fibers on our green wash mitt are plaited together to make them extra thick and absorbent, so you can expect your mitt to hold an enormous amount of water. The green color also highlights dirt and grime, allowing you to really target tough areas and get your car looking beautiful all over. 3. Work out of direct sunlight

We’ve said it countless times, with extreme weather of any kind comes issues, and the issues for your car manifest themselves on the exterior as well as the interior. Paintwork can warp, interior plastics and materials can crack. We make our products pH neutral so as not to cause extra problems, but when it comes down to it, the best thing you can do is pre-empt the heat in your area by washing, sealing and protecting your vehicle, then covering it up when the sun comes and leaving the detailing for another day – or doing it inside if you’re lucky enough to have a garage!

4. Use the two-bucket method

This is a great tip and super easy to do. Instead of getting one Plastic Bucket, get two – one for soap, one for water. Each time you apply our Vital Car Wash Soap, rinse your mitt out in the water bucket so that there is no contamination of the soap bucket. Remember, as you touch the surface of your car, you’re releasing contaminants and they get caught up in your mitt. So, to make doubly sure that you’re getting rid of all the dirt and grit before touching your paintwork again (and risking scratching it), pop a grit guard in the bottom of your water bucket. The Grit Guard traps dirt that comes off your Wash Pad, ensuring that it stays at the bottom of the bucket, so no dirt will be reintroduced into the wash solution.
